Our Story

Socal Fencing Academy (SoCALFA) is a premier fencing club located in Orange County. We believe we can improve student-athletes’ lives through the Olympic sport of saber fencing. We believe everyone can be a champion through passion, relentless dedication, discipline, responsibility and exemplary sportsmanship. Hamid Taherkhani

Head Sabre Coach

Coach Hamid is the Head Sabre Coach and owner. He started fencing at the age of 8 in Iran and he has over two decades of competitive and coaching experience. He has an illustrious career as former Iranian National Team member, winning multiple World Cup, Grand Prix, Asian as well as National Championship medals. Many of his students are highly ranked U.S. National fencers and some have been recruited to top U.S universities and colleges such as Harvard, M.I.T., Columbia University, U Penn, John Hopkins University and Northwestern.

Sabre Coach

With over 20 years of experience, Coach Hamdy has built a remarkable legacy of coaching elite fencers to international success. His expertise and guidance have been instrumental in the careers of several world-class athletes, including: •Ziad Elsissy, ranked 2nd in the FIE Senior standings, a bronze medalist at the Senior World Cup, gold medalist at the Mediterranean Games, and a finalist at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games. •Shaun Kim, ranked 10th in the FIE Junior standings, a gold medalist at the Pan American Cadet Games, a silver medalist at the 2023 Cadet World Cup, and a top-five finisher at the 2024 Bulgaria World Cup. •Mohamed Amer, who achieved a 6th-place finish at the Paris Olympic Games and multiple Junior World Cup medals. •Robert Wang, who secured 11th place at the 2024 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2023 Madrid World Cup. •Lt. Leanne Singleton-Comfort, ranked 8th in the U.S. for Women’s Sabre in 2019-20 season, with multiple podium finishes in national and international competitions and significant contributions to her pursuit of the Tokyo Olympic Qualification.

 

Coach Hamdy’s career spans elite coaching positions with the Egyptian National Team, the USA Air Force Academy, University of North Carolina and the renowned Tim Morehouse and Premier Fencing Club. He combines his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Alexandria University with advanced training from USA Fencing Coaches Clinics and the Hungarian Fencing Federation to develop tailored, cutting-edge training programs for his athletes.Known for his innovative techniques, deep knowledge of sports physiology, and unwavering commitment to his fencers’ success, Coach Hamdy is dedicated to elevating athletes to their highest potential. His passion for the sport and proven track record of excellence make him an exceptional addition to our club.

Alain Tandron Lam

Saber Coach

Coach Tandron is the Mexico National Women’s Saber Head Coach and Team Coach for State of Baja California. He is Cuban-born Mexican citizen who was invited by the State of Baja California through an exchange program 11 years ago. Under his direction, Coach Tandron has put together a world class fencing program that made Tijuana the fencing powerhouse of Mexico, attracting talents from all over the country. During this time, he has developed Olympians as well as champions at World Cup, Pan American, Zonal and Mexican National tournaments. He is well recognized as the only coach to have ever produced a Junior World Champion in Mexican history. Since winning gold at Junior and bronze at Cadet World Championship in 2017 along with multiple World Cup top 3 medals since, his protégée Natalia Botello has become No.1 in Junior Women Saber in the world. It is no surprise that he has been awarded Coach of the Year by his state multiple times. As one of only six referees in the world who is highly versed in all three fencing weapons, Coach Tandron is a familiar face at major tournaments all over the world. His deep knowledge of the sport and the extensive network he has built over the years in the fencing world make him an indispensable asset for SoCALFA.

Jay Lee

Saber  Coach

Coach Jay has been trained to be a professional fencer and a coach for nearly 20 years. During his competitive fencing days, Coach Jay was the Gold and Silver medalist in Asia Junior Championship (Kuwait, 2006), Junior National Champion in Korea (2005) and 1st place in the selection match for Korean Cadet National Team and participated in World Cadet Fencing Championship (Trapani-Italy, 2003). After his education and competitive college fencing career, he started his 10+ years of coaching career spanning Asia, Europe and U.S.- including positions as the National Team Coach in Indonesia, coach at US Metro Fencing Club in Paris, France. He holds coaching licenses BPJEPS in France, coaching license in Korea, and Asia referee license.

The Olympic class is our highest level and most intensive program that will fulfill the potential of competitive Elite fencers with collegiate and international aspirations. 11.5 hrs weekly.

 

By invitation only.

 

Placement in the Olympic program is based on tournament performance and coaches' evaluations.

 

3-4 private lessons are required with our coaches weekly.
