CORE is our foundation program ideal for entry level individuals who want to learn the fundamental core skills of saber fencing, from which all advanced tactics and techniques are branched off; along with improvement in focus, coordination, decision-making, agility and strength.

Hamid Taherkhani
Head Sabre Coach
Coach Hamid is the Head Sabre Coach and owner. He started fencing at the age of 8 in Iran and he has over two decades of competitive and coaching experience. He has an illustrious career as former Iranian National Team member, winning multiple World Cup, Grand Prix, Asian as well as National Championship medals. Many of his students are highly ranked U.S. National fencers and some have been recruited to top U.S universities and colleges such as Harvard, M.I.T., Columbia University, U Penn, John Hopkins University and Northwestern.
Peyman Fakhri
Sabre Coach
Coach Peyman is one of the most renowned and sought-after sabre fencing coaches and referees in the world. He was Head Coach of the National Iran Fencing Team from 2009-2021 where he qualified and led his athletes to 3 Olympic Games in a row- London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020- and demonstrated outstanding results. In the last five years, he has developed 3 Top 40 fencers in FIE ranking who won 9 different medals (Gold, Silver & Bronze) in World Championships, Grand Prix and World Cups.
Since he became an international FIE referee for sabre and foil in 1999, Coach Peyman has been designated by FIE as referee to 2016 Rio Olympic Games, 2013-15 World Senior Championships, 2011-13 Junior and Cadet Championships, as well as 25 World Cup and Grand Prix events across the world. He was also elected as Member of Asian referee commission from 2014 till now.
Coach Peyman competed as Team Member of Iran National Team for 12 years- from 1995-2006- and achieved 9 different medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) in Asian Championship, including Gold medal in 1999 Asia and Oceania Individual Championships in China.
Coach Peyman will bring his Olympic level fencing expertise, knowledge and experience to help SoCALFA shape more champions.
Alain Tandron Lam
Saber Coach
Coach Tandron is the Mexico National Women’s Saber Head Coach and Team Coach for State of Baja California. He is Cuban-born Mexican citizen who was invited by the State of Baja California through an exchange program 11 years ago. Under his direction, Coach Tandron has put together a world class fencing program that made Tijuana the fencing powerhouse of Mexico, attracting talents from all over the country. During this time, he has developed Olympians as well as champions at World Cup, Pan American, Zonal and Mexican National tournaments. He is well recognized as the only coach to have ever produced a Junior World Champion in Mexican history. Since winning gold at Junior and bronze at Cadet World Championship in 2017 along with multiple World Cup top 3 medals since, his protégée Natalia Botello has become No.1 in Junior Women Saber in the world. It is no surprise that he has been awarded Coach of the Year by his state multiple times. As one of only six referees in the world who is highly versed in all three fencing weapons, Coach Tandron is a familiar face at major tournaments all over the world. His deep knowledge of the sport and the extensive network he has built over the years in the fencing world make him an indispensable asset for SoCALFA.
Jay Lee
Saber Coach
Coach Jay has been trained to be a professional fencer and a coach for nearly 20 years. During his competitive fencing days, Coach Jay was the Gold and Silver medalist in Asia Junior Championship (Kuwait, 2006), Junior National Champion in Korea (2005) and 1st place in the selection match for Korean Cadet National Team and participated in World Cadet Fencing Championship (Trapani-Italy, 2003). After his education and competitive college fencing career, he started his 10+ years of coaching career spanning Asia, Europe and U.S.- including positions as the National Team Coach in Indonesia, coach at US Metro Fencing Club in Paris, France. He holds coaching licenses BPJEPS in France, coaching license in Korea, and Asia referee license.
